Your Guide For Individual and Relationship Growth

Rebecca McDermott
Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

As a child, I loved untying knots in my mother's jewelry. The ones that formed over years of inattention and mishandled care. Messy links that caused frustration, exasperation and were thrown down to be worked on later. I spent hours working out the complicated pattern until the chain was free to be worn, and purposeful again. Since 2012, I have helped my clients untangle, and strengthen their knots to foster personal growth and create security in relationships.
I hold a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Chestnut Hill College, and am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in Pennsylvania. I began my vocation at The Center for Families and Relationships, a Philadelphia community mental health agency, and provided care in a local partial hospital program for adults, children and teens. I have previous career experience in the communications field. If there is one thing I am passionate about it is connecting people! Contact me to see how I can help you begin to untangle, and connect!

Comunication & Connection

Does it feel like you and your partner are stuck in a tumultous cycle? Things seem to be going fine until a simple conversation about loading the dishwasher turns into a heated argument, followed by the silent treatment. In couples therapy we work to identify this cycle and problem solve together. Imagine a relationship filled with more joy, safety, and closeness. Stop comparing your marriage to other's. Stop fantasizing about divorce. Renew your relationship. Feel loved, be heard.

Transitions & Parenting Challenges

Life throws many surprises at us, and while we cannot predict the outcome of any situation, we can take control of how we respond. Your changing family may need support through divorce, death, mental health concerns, or natural life cycle demands. When one family member experiences something, the whole family endures. I guide families using a strength based approach to build upon your existing skills for improved communication, unity, and resilience.

Nurturing The Relationship With Yourself

No great story has only one sentence. You were raised in the context of others, the location, upper/middle/lower class, race, religion, sexuality, food, clothes. All helped you inform who you are. Sometimes those contexts can be a bit harsh, and now as an adult you've been in series of relationships where you felt less than, or left before you could get hurt. Happiness can only come when you've lost the weight, gotten the position, bought the dream car. You describe yourself as always giving to others, only to realize you never get in return. Call me to begin untangling yourself from the stories that aren't yours. Move with me towards self-acceptance, self-awareness, and identify your needs. Imagine if your real life was as joyful as your Instagram profile makes it seem.
